       No dust, no arc, no consumables, low energy consumption? This is friction stir welding. Friction stir welding (FSW) was first proposed by the British Welding Institute (TWI) in 1990. It is a kind of welding technology different from traditional welding, which has no smoke, arc light, shielding gas and welding wire in the welding process. Due to its unique process and advantages in efficiency, cost and environmental protection, friction stir welding has been widely used in aviation, shipbuilding, train, it and other industrial manufacturing industries.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a kind of solid phase bonding method under the action of mechanical force and friction heat. When the stirring needle rotates, it extends into the joint of the workpiece. The friction heat between the stirring head (mainly the shaft shoulder) and the workpiece is rotated, which makes the material in front of the welding head produce strong plastic deformation. Then with the movement of the welding head, the highly plastic deformation material gradually deposits on the back of the stirring head, thus forming the weld.
The friction stir welding system integrated with industrial robot and welding spindle equipment can improve the flexibility of welding operation, which is suitable for batch welding manufacturing of space complex structure products, and improve the degree of welding automation and production efficiency. In addition, according to statistics, the welding cost of friction stir welding is 20% lower than that of argon arc welding; Compared with FSW, the welding cost of FSW is only half of that of FSW.

The system is composed of FANUC m-900ia robot and welding spindle equipment developed by criq, a Canadian company. The high precision and heavy load capacity of FANUC m-900ia can stably apply the axial pressure to the stirring head to make the stirring needle insert into the workpiece and keep the shoulder of the stirring head in contact with the surface of the workpiece, and maintain the accurate movement track, so as to ensure the welding quality.
Robot friction stir welding is also suitable for complex surface and trajectory welding. Another case is FANUC's latest heavy-duty robot m-900ib with FANUC's i-stir spindle welding package developed by PAB, a system integrator in the United States. The welding spindle can measure the force value on X and Y axes, so as to monitor the welding process. At the same time, the high-precision z-axis load control can ensure the perfect welding during high-speed welding.
In addition, with FANUC roboguide off-line programming technology, the robot can realize the welding process simulation and trajectory programming of complex workpiece in the simulation environment, thus greatly improving the efficiency of on-site programming and debugging and the accuracy of welding trajectory programming.
